A-rin was hospitalized on Friday June 23rd
having been diagnosed with "Peripheral Facial Nerve Paralysis", a disease that can (and in this case did) strike suddenly and without warning. Common symptoms are loss of nerve control on one side of the face, including the effected side of the face going slack, the mouth hanging open, inability to close the eye on that side of the face, difficulty speaking, difficulty eating, among other serious symptoms.
Medicinal therapies, steroids, and surgery are the most common treatments. In less severe cases symptoms will recede within two to three weeks. In other cases it can take six months or more to recover. Often recovery is not complete and facial control is lost. Hearing and vision on the effected side of the face can also be lost due to the routing of the effected nerves from the brain to the face.
All concerts and appearances scheduled through August and September have been cancelled or postponed. Further information will be published as it becomes available.
In her statement posted on the Momoclo website, A-rin reports that she is very scared but hopeful. She says she is grateful to the other members and manager who insisted she immediately go to the hospital. She also apologized to her fans for the inconvenience (as if any of us feel inconvenienced). Oricon News confirms that the right side of A-rin's face is the stricken area.
The most common cause of peripheral facial nerve paralysis is Bell Palsy. Other common causes of peripheral facial nerve paralysis are stroke, herpes, lyme disease, tumors, diabetes, and blunt force trauma - like maybe Reni-chan gorilla punched A-rin in the face, though there is no confirmation of any fisticuffs breaking out between band members at Friday's rehearsal.
Some research has suggested that the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID vaccine may cause peripheral facial nerve paralysis as a rare side effect. But a recent study refutes this claim. However, it seems there are several cases where those who've been infected with COVID later develop peripheral facial nerve paralysis.
According to Kote's Medical Information:
"Despite the benign nature of the disease, significant anxiety is endured by patients due to the fear of stroke or permanent facial disfigurement. Patients exhibit abrupt or progressive unilateral weakness of the facial muscles (facial asymmetry, depression of the angle of mouth), which may be preceded or accompanied by earache. Glandular secretion, stapedius muscle function, and taste sensation often remain unaffected. Epiphora (excessive tearing) due to ectropion and lagophthalmos (inability to close the eye completely) due to weakness of the orbicularis oculi muscle also occur. Q:
What is the cause?
Dr. Yagi:
“In Sasaki san’s case it appears to be a sudden onset, but the two most common causes are from Bell Palsy, or a viral infection from the herpes-zoster virus known as Hunt’s Syndrome. Bell Palsy is the more common type of facial nerve paralysis, however. Research shows that a viral infection from Hunt’s Syndrome is responsible for about 20% of facial nerve paralysis cases.
“In some form or another, most humans carry the herpes-zoster virus, so it is not unusual for this to be the cause.
“The herpes-zoster virus remain in the body even after recovering from infection. It lurks throughout the body. When something activates one of these viruses, they can go on a rampage, causing Bell Palsy or Hunt’s Syndrome."
Q:
There have been other cases of celebrities with peripheral facial nerve paralysis. Are there any characteristics that make entertainers more prone to facial paralysis, such as stress or overwork?
Dr. Yagi:
“We can't say for sure…certainly many people who suffer facial paralysis typically do not get enough sleep.
“It’s true that people who develop facial paralysis tend to be sleep-deprived or lead busy lives, so it is possible that overwork and stress might be factors. However, there is no limitation on gender or age. Anyone in their 20s or older can develop it.
“With Hunt's Syndrome, herpes virus appears in the ears and is painful. In the case of Bell Palsy, the main symptom is the inability to move the affected areas of the face, though pain is rare.
“A common symptom is difficulty drinking, where liquids spill from one side of the mouth because the muscles have gone slack. Of course, patients will notice the facial distortion when they look in the mirror, and that’s when they know something is wrong. Others come to see me because they are felling discomfort in the area around their mouth.”
Q:
What should you do if you notice something wrong with your face or that of a family member?
Dr. Yagi:
“The progression of peripheral facial nerve paralysis varies greatly from person to person. Some people become severely affected all at once, while others have symptoms that progress slowly.
"It depends on the severity of the symptoms, so it's hard to say, but either way, it's best to go to the hospital as soon as possible. Especially in severe cases, it is necessary to start treatment as soon as possible to limit the damage to the nerves. Since the facial nerves run through the temporal bone that makes up the ear, you can go to an otolaryngologist or a neurologist. Whichever you choose. They will first examine your brain for abnormalities, and if there are no problems, they will begin treatment, assuming it is peripheral paralysis.”

Dr. Yagi:
“The period during which the steroids are administered is not equal to the time necessary for full treatment and recovery.
"Steroids are given during the first week to 10 days of initial treatment. Nerve fibers have the ability to regenerate on their own, so the goal is to minimize damage. Steroids help regenerate nerves. But since there is no direct stimulating effect, you have to wait for the nerves to recover. Generally speaking, nerve regeneration is about 1 mm per day. According to Dr. Yagi, about 80% of people who develop the condition recover without problems. In most cases after recovering from the condition, it is not likely to recur.

According to London based otolaryngological surgeon Dr. Michael Wareing,
“About 70-75 per cent of people recover spontaneously within three months. By 9 months about 85-95 per cent have completely recovered. However that still leaves 5-15 per cent of people with some residual weakness, varying from a mild asymmetry to no recovery of full facial function.”
***NOTE: Beyond traditional treatment with steroids, there has been significant success with enhanced acupuncture, especially in cases that are treated immediately. Hopefully Ahrin is getting the best possible treatment and she will achieve a 100% recovery. RR
